2026-02-20 - 14:15

Carnival 2026 delivered a record-setting season that further strengthened Trinidad and Tobago’s reputation as a premier global cultural destination, according to the Ministry of Culture and Community Development and the National Carnival Commission (NCC). In a media release issued on Ash Wednesday, the Ministry and the NCC attributed the festival’s success to robust public participation, dynamic programming, and coordinated collaboration among stakeholders, describing the celebrations, staged under the theme “Yuh Go Love Dis,” as both memorable and impactful. Organisers noted that communities across the country played a central role in energising the season, with activities ranging from grassroots events to large-scale national productions. Among the standout features were the Panorama competitions, which they said united communities through the spirit of steelband, drew strong audiences, and reaffirmed the national instrument’s enduring place at the heart of Carnival traditions. Infrastructure initiatives also contributed significantly to this year’s experience. Officials highlighted the Flava Food Village as a secure and family-friendly space that combined culinary offerings with live entertainment, while the John Cupid Carnival Village preserved traditional Carnival expressions and showcased heritage art forms. Carnival Monday and Tuesday were described as vibrant and well attended, with thousands of masqueraders filling the streets. The release stated that citizens, members of the diaspora, and international visitors alike embraced the festivities, supporting bands and contributing to an atmosphere marked by unity and celebration. The Ministry and the NCC commended masqueraders, bandleaders, and service providers for maintaining discipline throughout the season, noting that public cooperation helped ensure a safe environment and reinforced Carnival’s role as both a cultural treasure and a unifying national event. Acknowledgment was also extended to key cultural organisations, including Pan Trinbago, the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation, and the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival Bands Association, for safeguarding the festival’s artistic traditions. Authorities further recognised operational support provided by the Ministry of Homeland Security, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service, the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society, REACT, the media, and other partners whose coordination supported the smooth execution of Carnival 2026. The Ministry additionally praised the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government and regional corporations for completing post-Carnival clean-up and sanitation efforts, restoring public spaces shortly after the celebrations concluded. According to the release, the festival’s success aligns with government policy to position Carnival as a major economic engine supported by year-round cultural programming. Planning for Carnival 2027 is already underway as organisers seek to build on the momentum generated this year.
