Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has emerged as the biggest contender at the 98th Academy Awards, earning a historic 16 nominations—the most ever received by a single film in Oscar history. The nominations were announced on Thursday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. With this milestone, Sinners surpassed the long-standing record of 14 nominations, previously held by acclaimed titles such as All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. In addition to securing a Best Picture nomination, Coogler earned nods for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, further cementing the film’s dominance in this year’s awards race. The film’s leading man, Michael B. Jordan, also reached a personal career milestone, receiving his first-ever Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Coogler Makes History in Best Director Race Coogler’s recognition carries additional significance, as he becomes one of only seven Black filmmakers to be nominated for Best Director.
