Major Milestone to Mark Reggae Month

2026-02-09 - 13:07

By Anthony George The quiet village of Pelham in Westchester County will come alive to the sound of reggae music as organizers of a milestone event to mark Reggae Month take the music to this locale. February is celebrated globally as Reggae and Black History Month. It is also the birthday month of late Reggae Icons Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, and Bunny Rugs. It is also the anniversary month of the New York premiere of The Harder They Come. In celebration of these milestones, on February 15, the New York Promotion Company, Signature Society will not only stage a screening of The Harder They Come at the Pelham Picture House Theatre in Westchester County, New York, but will pay tribute to several reggae icons – Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Bunny Rugs, Sly Dunbar, Jimmy Cliff, and Third World co-founder Cat Coore. The evening begins with networking and cocktails, followed by videos chronicling the music from Harry Belafonte to Dancehall. The digitally remastered The Harder They Come will be screened next, and a panel discussion wraps up the evening. Just over fifty years ago, the late Jimmy Cliff and a talented local cast of actors brought Jamaica’s sights, culture, rhythm, and resilience to the world stage. The New York celebration and honor are presented by The Signature Society, whose CEO and founder, Sephron Mair, told the Gleaner that the rare alignment of the movie’s anniversary, Jimmy Cliff’s passing, and Reggae month triggered the need for a special celebration, honor, and recognition. Mair said, “The passing of Jimmy and later Cat Coore and Sly Dunbar compel the Diaspora to reflect on the rich heritage of Reggae and Jamaican culture as a whole. Time will now be carved out to reflect on these music icons,” he said. The event takes place at the same Pelham Picture House Theatre in Westchester County, where in 2004, the Society premiered ONE LOVE MOVIE to a capacity audience. Dignitaries, Community leaders, entertainers, and media personalities will be in attendance at the event. Early booking is recommended as seats are limited. Interested individuals can obtain more information on the Signature Society website. Thesignaturesociety.com.
