Grenadian Dentist Dr. Eugene Stanislaus Builds a Legacy of Care, Equality, and Excellence

by Mell P For Dr. Eugene Stanislaus, dentistry has always been about more than clinical skill. It is a profession rooted in dignity, equality, and service, values passed down from his father, also a dentist who later became an ambassador and helped shape his son’s outlook on life and care. Although they never practiced together, Dr. Stanislaus says his father taught him one enduring lesson: treat everyone the same, regardless of background, status, or financial means. That philosophy continues to guide his work today. Dr. Stanislaus, a Grenada-born cosmetic and restorative dentist, now leads a comprehensive dental practice offering services across all specialties. He exemplifies the half-century tradition of excellence at Brooklyn Heights Dental, and his commitment to excellence is reflected in more than 4,000 hours of post-graduate dental training, underscoring his belief that continuous education is essential to delivering the highest standard of care. “I believe patients deserve the best, whether they are coming in for a routine filling or a complex restorative procedure,” he said. Deeply connected to his Caribbean heritage, Dr. Stanislaus maintains strong ties to Grenada, returning frequently. Those visits, he says, remind him of the importance of community and compassion, principles that shape how he practices dentistry. He is particularly outspoken about treating all patients with equal respect, regardless of their ability to pay, a stance he says reflects both his upbringing and his Caribbean values. The Mouth as a Window to Overall Health Dr. Stanislaus is also passionate about educating communities, especially Black and Caribbean populations, on the link between oral health and systemic disease. He notes that conditions such as periodontal disease are often misunderstood and underestimated. Bacteria from untreated gum disease, he explained, can enter the bloodstream and contribute to serious health problems including strokes, diabetes complications, and organ disease. Recognizing these connections, he believes, can lead to earlier interventions and better health outcomes. He has expressed interest in participating in dental missions throughout the Caribbean, though he acknowledges the logistical challenges that often deter medical professionals from long-term participation. Children’s dental care remains a major focus of Dr. Stanislaus’ work. He has spoken openly about the difficulty of performing extractions on young patients and his preference for restorative solutions whenever possible. During Children’s Dental Awareness Month, he encourages parents to reduce sugar consumption, establish consistent brushing routines, particularly before bedtime, and schedule dental check-ups every six months. These preventive measures, he says, can significantly reduce long-term oral health issues. For children from the Caribbean who may have had limited access to dental care, Dr. Stanislaus is especially committed to providing necessary treatments, including root canals, rather than defaulting to extractions that could affect long-term oral health. As Grenada celebrated the 52nd anniversary of its independence, Dr. Stanislaus reflected on the resilience of the Grenadian people, particularly in the face of natural disasters. He sees that same resilience reflected in Caribbean communities abroad. When asked how he hopes to be remembered, Dr. Stanislaus pointed not to accolades, but to impact. “I want my legacy to be about compassionate, high-quality care for everyone,” he said. “And about running a practice that values people, patients and staff alike.” He adds that providing fair wages and benefits, including medical insurance, vacation time, and retirement plans, is part of his responsibility as a healthcare leader. For Dr. Eugene Stanislaus, dentistry is not just a profession, it is a lifelong commitment to service, equality, and community.
