A Guyanese university athlete has been formally charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of her boyfriend, a fellow Caribbean student-athlete, at Lincoln University in Missouri. According to a popular news outlet, Denita Jackson, a senior sprinter whose hometown is listed as Berbice, Guyana, was charged Monday in Cole County with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Cole County Prosecutor Locke Thompson identified the victim as 23-year-old Kevaughn Goldson, a Jamaican national and senior member of the university’s track and field team. Alleged Confrontation Court documents indicate that Jackson and Goldson were involved in a romantic relationship that authorities say included prior domestic disputes. Investigators allege that the fatal altercation was triggered by an argument over a missing bottle of cologne, which Jackson reportedly believed was connected to suspicions of infidelity involving one of her roommates. According to police reports, Jackson left their residence late Sunday evening for work but returned shortly after 1 a.m. Monday, citing illness. She told investigators that Goldson had been in her bedroom when she departed but was not present upon her return. Jackson allegedly told police she heard her roommate speaking with someone behind a locked bedroom door. Using a hairclip to unlock it, she said she entered the room and found Goldson and the roommate in bed, fully clothed, with the missing cologne nearby. Authorities state that Jackson admitted jumping onto the bed and grabbing both the cologne bottle and Goldson’s shirt, leading to a physical struggle. She told investigators that Goldson kicked her in the stomach, causing her to fall, and then allegedly pinned her down and began choking her. Police say Jackson reported that she reached under the bed, retrieved a knife, and stabbed Goldson in the back and chest during the confrontation. Emergency Response and Charges Officers responded after Jackson called 911 to report the stabbing. Goldson was initially transported to Capital Region Medical Center before being airlifted to University Hospital, where he later died during surgery. Jackson was taken into custody and booked into the Cole County Jail. Prosecutors have charged her with second-degree murder, alleging she knowingly caused Goldson’s death, along with armed criminal action for the use of a weapon in the commission of a felony. The case remains under active investigation, and no trial date has yet been announced.
