Alvin Ailey Company Received $10 Million to Fund Endowment for Leader

2026-02-06 - 15:57

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, one of the world’s most celebrated modern dance companies, has received a landmark $10 million endowment gift to permanently fund its Artistic Director position, bolstering the organization’s long-term artistic and leadership stability. The major contribution comes from Daria L. Wallach, Chair of AILEY’s Board of Trustees, and will support the role now officially titled the Daria L. and Eric J. Wallach Artistic Director. The endowment is designed to ensure sustained excellence and creative vision at the highest level of the company, allowing future directors to focus on artistic innovation, talent development, and expanding Ailey’s cultural impact without the uncertainty of year-to-year funding. Founded in 1958 by visionary choreographer Alvin Ailey, the organization has become a cornerstone of American dance, renowned for works that celebrate the African-American experience and for extensive education and community outreach programs. AILEY encompasses the flagship dance company, the Ailey School, Ailey II, and numerous educational and community programs that reach dancers and audiences worldwide. The endowment arrives as the company embarks on its 2026 national tour, led by Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack, a former Ailey dancer and arts leader who took the helm in 2025. Wallach’s gift is intended to sustain the artistic director’s role in shaping the company’s creative direction, nurturing new generations of choreographers and performers, and deepening Ailey’s artistic legacy across the U.S. and around the world. This kind of endowed leadership position is rare in dance, reflecting both the prominence of Alvin Ailey’s legacy and a growing investment in securing the future of cultural institutions that have shaped American arts and heritage.
